As the domestic dog population has exploded in Japan over the last couple of decades, so have services catering to the pet market.
Dog clinics, dog barbers, dog boutiques and even dog hotels have appeared in major cities and at Narita and Kansai Airports, the country's two main exit and entry points. There are an estimated 13 million dogs in Japan, with Aichi Prefecture having the highest ratio of humans to canine pets, double the national number, compared to less than 30 years ago when the so-called 'bubble economy' began in earnest in the late 1980s. Dog-related businesses are now estimated to be worth over 1.6 trillion yen per year in Japan.
The falling birth rate, higher expendable incomes, later marriage, stress-reduction and the sheer "kawaii-ness" of our furry friends are all reasons for the boom in dogs' popularity in Japan.
